LWHS Theater: Behind the Curtain | EASTSIDE ELEVATED

The rich history of the Lake Washington High School (LWHS) Theatre Program is a remarkable testament to the dedication of its educators, students, and community. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with a key figure in the program, who shared insights into what has made LWHS one of the top five schools for theatre in Washington State.

Program with a Vision

At the heart of any successful program is a leader who prioritizes both the students and the art. Drawing inspiration from the legendary Ruben Van Kempen, the Morgan Heetbrink and the current staff has cultivated an environment that emphasizes growth and challenges. By investing time and resources into students while encouraging a growth mindset, they’ve created an atmosphere where each learner is pushed beyond their comfort zone. The results speak for themselves; students consistently exceed expectations and develop the resilience needed for success.

Success Stories and Inspiring Guests

The LWHS Theatre Program has seen numerous students transition into notable careers in the arts. Highlights include those who have gone on to pursue Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees and former students, like Kat Rodriguez, who now stars in the acclaimed musical "Wicked." The program also welcomes industry professionals to share their experiences and wisdom with the students. Notable actors such as James Earl Jones II and Joshua Grosso have lent their time to inspire the next generation, affirming the belief that many in the industry are eager to give back.

Lifelong Skills Beyond the Stage

The impact of theatre extends far beyond the high school stage. Participation in the LWHS Theatre Program equips students with invaluable life skills. Emphasizing communication, teamwork, leadership, and adaptability, the program advocates for values encapsulated by the acronym MAGIC: Mentorship, Accountability, Growth, Inclusivity, and Communication. These principles not only enhance students as performers but also help shape them into compassionate and capable individuals ready to tackle challenges in any field.

A Comprehensive Program

The LWHS Theatre Program encompasses a broad range of disciplines, providing students with hands-on experiences in both performance and technical theatre. Under the expert guidance of the tech director, Mark Staiff, students undergo rigorous training that prioritizes safety and excellence. This dual focus has made the tech program as competitive as the acting program, further illustrating the comprehensive approach to theatre arts at LWHS.

A Supportive Community

The success of the LWHS Theatre Program is a group effort that includes a dedicated team of educators and supporters. Collaborations with faculty members like Su Ring Vitue, Rick O’Leary, and Christine Bell elevate the program’s visibility and strengthen the community’s connection to the arts. Their collective commitment fosters an environment where creativity can thrive and students feel seen and valued.

The Role of Boosters

Behind the scenes, a robust booster organization tirelessly works to provide the necessary support for productions, from financial assistance to artistic guidance. With a dedicated board of 15 volunteers, including notable figures like costumer Karee Oliver and parent president Kendra Rosencrans, the boosters ensure that the program continues to flourish. Their behind-the-scenes efforts, along with those of many long-time supporters, create a solid foundation for the theatre program's success.

The LWHS Theatre Program is a shining example of what can be achieved when passion, dedication, and community support come together. By prioritizing student growth, fostering relationships with professionals, and instilling lifelong skills, the program not only prepares its students for future endeavors in the arts but also nurtures well-rounded individuals ready to make their mark on the world. As the curtain rises on each production, it’s clear that the legacy of the LWHS Theatre Program is destined to continue thriving for years to come. If supporting the arts in our youth resonates with you, consider volunteering or donating to this amazing organization.
